TYT - Cop Busted watching child porn. leaves crumb trail
"y'all just fill the thread with "cops r bad M'kay" comments, and have some inane circle jerk of meaningless drivel time."

To be fair to the rest of videosift that normally happens when the police do something wrong and don't face any consequences. As for the cop, surprised he didn't help himself to some free blow while he was at it.

Got Fired Today... (Happy Talk Post)
>> ^rebuilder:
>> ^KnivesOut:
Got fired because... they couldn't tell me why. When I asked why I was being fired, they told me "the fact that you don't know is why."

Is that legal over there? Were you on a trial period or something? At least over here, once you're past the two-month (or thereabouts) trial period where either party can terminate the employment contract without advance notice or a reason, they have to give a valid reason for firing you. Or did you just not feel like pressing the matter?

I think it depends on the state. In my state they don't have to give a reason, they can fire you at anytime for any reason, unless that reason is racial or gender based, in which case they make something up.

Obviously a reaction on Taiwan's part to Dag's militant anti-Taiwanese stance.

TDS: From Here to Neutrality
I love how this has become a campaign against BIG SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT. I gotta hand it to the telecoms for knowing which direction to spin when the wind turns. Here's another way to spin it, BIG CORPORATE GOVERNMENT backing their moves to monopolize.

I do see some of the logic in allowing telecoms to prioritize packets, however the telecoms and big businesses in general have shown themselves to be anything but scrupulous when there's money involved. Its a situation that's ripe for abuse, and the people who want control of the reins have shown themselves more than capable of beating the horse till it dies.

The Today Show covers the Cash4Gold ripoff
I've been seeing these commercials for a long time and always figured it was a rip off, always wondered how much, turns out probably a lot. Problem is while the lady may have been able to find jewelers that were willing to offer here a much better deal that doesn't mean everyone else is in the same situation. Especially if they live in a smaller town, I've seen how those guys operate, and its basically a loot and pillage operation.

Reality TV Show to Convert Atheists
^I think you're probably dead on with your assessment. I've met a lot of people that aren't religious or answer they don't know if God exists or not. To me these people are kind of in limbo, they don't seem to have given much thought to the issue or they're unwilling to completely give up magical thinking. A lot of people just can't accept that not everything has a reason.

That said, I could see how a true atheist could switch to become a theist. Being an atheist doesn't necessarily mean reaching fulfillment, on the contrary I think its harder to feel fulfillment as an atheist. There is no standard for what it means to live a fulfilling life as an atheist as there is as a theist. So I could see how someone who feels unfulfilled might see religion as a possibility for filling that void.

Bachelors and Masters in psychology. I blame it for my liberal bias, all that science and critical thinking .

Uninterruptible power supply Advice? (Geek Talk Post)
APC has pretty good UPSU, you can probably find a 600watt rated one for around $80. If you're just looking to avoid damage a good surge protector will do the same thing, but an UPSU will make it so you've got enough time to save anything and properly shut your machine down, or if you're in an area that suffers from the occasional brown out it'll keep you going till the power comes back on. I actually use one for my broadband modem as well as my desktop so my internet doesn't die either.

I'd check your local office supply store, they always seem to have them on sale.

Do you play WoW? (Videogames Talk Post)
>> ^Sarzy:
See, this is one of the problems with WoW being so popular -- anytime you run into someone who plays it, odds are they're on a different server than you. I'm on Uldum.

Yeah, no way in hell I'm starting another yet another toon on yet another server. Not that I wouldn't want to play with ya'll, but I blow enough of my time on that game as it is O_O.

Illusion Cube Causes Brain To Fail
A lot of these illusions work because we're viewing them in 2 dimensions rather than in 3 dimensions as you would if you were in there in person. When viewing a 2 dimensional image such as any video our brain uses visual cues to give the impression of depth. If it didn't everything from TV to photographs would look mighty strange. Things like this just take advantage of those visual cues to make it seem like the cube is an actually 3 dimensional object.

Bill Maher Gets Schooled On Vaccines By Bill Frist
How many deaths in recent years have there been from the regular flu vaccine (shot)? Have they determined the shots as a cause or just coincidental. I've tried looking a little but couldn't find anything solid. The only thing I found was something from 1976 about swine flu vaccine from the CDC:

"In 1976, there was a small risk of GBS following influenza (swine flu) vaccination (approximately 1 additional case per 100,000 people who received the swine flu vaccine). That number of GBS cases was slightly higher than what is normally seen in the population, whether or not people were vaccinated. Since then, numerous studies have been done to evaluate if other flu vaccines were associated with GBS. In most studies, no association was found, but two studies suggested that approximately 1 additional person out of 1 million vaccinated people may be at risk for GBS associated with the seasonal influenza vaccine. FDA and CDC will be closely monitoring reports of serious problems following the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, including GBS."

Airport Wants to See You Naked
She's excited!! I bet. And think how fun it'll be to try and find yourself on a HOT CANDID AIRPORT NUDE SCANS porn site. Look Ma' I got my picture on the internets!

I think the potential for abuse seems pretty high here, and I don't think comparing it to a gynecologist is fair. The guys that work the x-ray and inspection machines probably had to attend a 1 week seminar on how to operate the machinery and what to look for. I don't think that compares to the $100k or so of Getting an MD and the years of education/training/and ethical philosophy. Not to mention that the scanner and the scaned are basically anonymous to each other. If something happened you wouldn't know who did it, and they wouldn't know who you are so they'd be less caring about violating your privacy.

Bill Maher Gets Schooled On Vaccines By Bill Frist
>> ^Yogi:

How is it hypocritical to say we treat symptoms as they pop up rather than care too much about public health as a whole. I don't see how that can be interpreted as a hypocritical statement, unless he himself can be proven to only treat symptoms or something.

It's not hypocritical to say we treat symptoms. Its hypocritical to advocate we focus more on preventative medicine and then run the fear monger campaign against vaccine on what so far what seems to be baseless conjecture and a poor understanding of evolution.

Bill Maher Gets Schooled On Vaccines By Bill Frist
Where's the clip of Bill Maher bitching that all we do is treat symptoms in this country and not engage in preventative medicine? I like Bill Maher, but what a hypocrite, it was like shades of Rush Limbaugh there complete with a ventriloquism act involving his ass. Way to pseudo science there Bill.

For the old-timers: Should Choggie be allowed back in the sift? (User Poll by gwiz665)
I always thought Choggie was banned for his frequent harassment of Dag. Or at least that was the final straw. So I'd say the question isn't so much if we'd like to see Choggie around again, its if Dag wants to deal with that again, or at least the possibility.

Police Shoot Homeowner 6 times
I'm sorry but I think not having public law enforcement is a terrible idea. Will crime magically disappear? No more gun toting crooks, rapists, or gangs? You think the Mafia's protection racket is bad now, how bad do you think it would if people had no alternative? Even non-criminally inclined would devolve into an eye for an eye culture, welcome to the return of the family feud, have as many kids as you can so they can take up arms against those no good dirty low down cheatin Johnson's.

I think the biggest problem with the police forces as they stand today is a complete lack of over site. All they have is there own internal division to investigate themselves, and a justice department that seems quick to side with the police. There's also the faction of police apologists and enablers, the ones who cheer on the cops when they break out the tear gas to break up some rowdy kids protesting something silly like their right to free speech. In this case the guy could have been a Republican poster boy. A guy using his 2nd amendment right to protect his home and family. He would have been a hero and paraded around on FOX news. Instead the cops shot him six times in the back, without so much a verbal warning, with his wife telling the cops he was in there and holding the intruder at gun point. Maybe if they see there actually is something wrong with the way the police operate, and not just a bunch of liberal pussies crying change can actually take place. Or maybe they'll just close their ears and eyes and pretend nothing happened.
