Feeding Cattle Seaweed Cuts Methane Significantly

newtboy says...

Red seaweed (e.g., Asparagopsis taxiformis) has been praised for inhibiting methane production from cattle by more than 80 percent because of its high bromoform content. trihalomethanes, such as bromoform decreases methane emissions from cattle belches.
Unfortunately, red seaweed is difficult to farm.

This particular video above is 4 years old, and seaweed supplements are now past the initial testing phase.

A few more recent articles I found include….

Honestly, that sounds way too good to be true. I'd love to see something about the metabolic pathways that explain how replacing such a small amount of feed could lead to 90% reduction in methane.

This screams for a LOT of replication (and explanation) before anyone gets too excited about it.

Interesting video, though.

I was in Ireland years ago. Someone told me that there were hot tubs up in Northern Ireland that were filled with seaweed. Slippery seaweed, loads of salt, water warmed up....

If you can't find someone to do the warm noodle treatment, maybe you can hie yourself to Ireland.

Report back to me?

All that free food!! I saw that beach of green-covered shoreline and almost started salivating.

I love seaweed so much that it completely escapes me today how much of an acquired taste it is.

The Importance of CPR

SDGundamX says...

Don't you have to check to make sure the airway is clear first before doing the rescue breath? It's been a while since my lifeguard training days, but we were told to check to make sure there was nothing (half-swallowed seaweed, vomit, etc.) obstructing before we began.

Wow, I think YOU need to give me recipes. I've been eating so simply. Roasted brussel sprouts with salt, pepper and olive oil is my favorite. Pillsbury crescent rolls are vegan, so I make little pizzas out of them on the fly or roll them up with sesame seeds and crumbled seaweed. I haven't gotten fancy with it, yet. I'm eating a lot of food, though. More than I ever ate with animal byproducts in the mix.

Seriously, send me recipes!

Crazy, I just started my vegan diet today as well. I am excited, I had stuffed grape leaves (rice, onion, dillweed, and mint in a nice lemony sunflower oil) for breakfast I know that is weird but I really wanted em. Then for lunch: paradise island tempeh (orange juice, agave, ginger, coconut, lime juice, cilantro, cashews, pineapple, green onion, a minuscule amount of jalapenos mixed in rice... it was goooood) and a side of mixed broccoli, water chestnuts, snappy green peas and ginger. Then dinner was just a carrot and shitloads of dates. I have a feeling dates are going to be a major reoccurring theme YUM

You should get some dates, they help with DOODOOO and they taste like little caramel treats!! And they are good for you, I cant even believe it! Why have they hid from me for so long?!!

You gotta send me recipes!!!
