Defining Vintage
Let's siftquisit this down, because I'm tired of seeing folks slapping * vintage on a sift just because its made to look old, but isn't... OR tagging it because it's a modern classic.
90s is NOT vintage yet! Good grief, I think if I dug in the back of my closet deep enough I could find a baja or poet blouse!!
Vintage sifts must be OLD as in containing original OLD content made by people that are now OLD or dead.
Now I've heard 25 knocked around a bit...but 20 years is fair.
Let's treat the vintage channel as the time capsule treasure chest it ought to be, OK???
Anyone disagree with this?

"Anyone disagree with this?"
No, ma'am, no!
Twenty years? Guess that makes me vintage, twice over.
Haha, liked the last line. "Does anyone have a problem with that??!! WELL??! Step on up!!
"Yea, that's what I thought..."
I agree with the 20 - 25 year rule, If it happened when I graduated high school...I would consider that vintage ::adjusts reading glasses::
Yeah, I did sound a bit bitchy didn't I? It felt good tho
I thought it was a very nice "Damnit, I'm not old yet!" kind of rant.
20, going once . . . going twice . . .
*quality, heh heh

SG rules!
To me, 20 years just doesn't seem vintage enough (20 years ago it was only 1987!) I would say anything 70s or earlier, but that's just me...
25 maybe? I guess what dag (IIRC) once said was true: it's personal.
Sure, this doesn't help, since there must be some definition good for everybody.
20 does seem a bit young. 30 does sound better, but since there are so many people already wanting to think 90s is vintage...this is in the middle.
We have labeled tons of 80's vintage already though.
Technically all songs older than 10 years since release are considered retro. Of course, this is just one radio station's definition and retro <>= vintage.
Having said that, there's an important issue of context at work. First-season Simpsons are just barely 20, but the very different animation/vocal stylings can rate such clips as vintage.
If someone has called the clip vintage and hasn't provided a rationale, ask for one before sniping it off is my opinion.
According to Webster’s the term classic, when used as adjective is defined as:
“1 a: serving as a standard of excellence : of recognized value b: TRADITIONAL, ENDURING c: characterized by simple tailored lines in fashion year after year ”.
Ok, “vintage”, which in its first form really refers most often specifically to the year when a certain wine was produced, but also has the following meanings:
“1 of wine: of, relating to, or produced in a particular vintage
2: of old, recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality : CLASSIC
3 a: dating from the past : OLD b: OUTMODED, OLD-FASHIONED
4: of the best and most characteristic -- used with a proper noun <vintage Shaw: a wise and winning comedy -- Time>”
Webster’s defines antique as:
”1: a relic or object of ancient times
2 a: a work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative object made at an earlier period and according to various customs laws at least 100 years ago b : a manufactured product (as an automobile) from an earlier period”,
or as an adjective:
“1: existing since or belonging to earlier times : ANCIENT <antique trade routes to the Orient>
2 a: being in the style or fashion of former times <antique manners and graces> b : made in or representative of the work of an earlier period <antique mirrors>; also : being an antique
3: selling or exhibiting antiques <an antique show>”
When you speak of a vintage automobile, vintage 1. A group or collection of people or things sharing certain characteristics. 2. A year or period of origin. 3. Length of existence; age. --vin·tage adj. 1. Of or relating to a vintage. 2. Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic. 3. Old or outmoded. 4.a. Of the best. b. Of the most distinctive.
There are no set of universally recognized criteria, cept for antiques....100 yrs or more-
That retro term is abused by folks with limited years clocked on the planet, and the nature of quickly recycling pop culture, by monkeys with limited capacity for taste, talent, and style......Like the folks who made the 4 year old, into an overnight, abstract artist genius....
My relativity-based theory of vintageness is still valid, IMHO.
No way in hell I would call Song 2 "vintage" let alone retro, just because it came out in April 2007.
I still think it depends on many factors.
Videogames and commercials, for example, age way more quickly than other things.
Good point Looris. In the car world, 25 years is minimum age to be considered a classic. On the other hand, any 68k Macintosh would have to qualify, even though the last of those appeared in the mid-90s.
There are definitely some posts, though, that I really don't know how to handle. I looked up this thread because I wasn't sure if this post qualifies or not. It was made quite recently, but the topic is very old. My instinct was to put it in vintage, but as I noted in the comment there, most of the channel invocations for that one would be more of a joke.
I see your point Jonny. My personal preference usually is the whole video be the original ...at least 20 years old. There are some compilations for documentaries and award shows that have footage hard to see anywhere else. I may have posted a few of those myself. There was a sift I posted of living in the 20s that was a compilation.
Hard call. But wouldn't it be nice to think of this channel as an archive of original old video?
What are your thoughts on this... Unless it contains rare footage prepared in such a way that we could never have seen it otherwise.... all content must be in original form?
I've been compiling vintage sifts into decades for a while. I'm hoping down the line there will be a way to incorporate the vintage channel into decades somehow. Maybe having the old sifts tagged will make that easier one day
I was saying I don't know. Since it's your channel, it's your call, and I'm fine with however you want to categorize them. I also happen to agree with you now that I've thought about it. While the stooges vid does have vintage material in it, it's not vintage itself.
Thanks for the tips too - I've definitely got a better handle on what you're looking for in vintage.
Well the nice thing about multi-channel tags is that if you see videogames+vintage, you know it's essentially no older than 30 years. Still a potentially valid piece of the channel, but definitely younger than the B&W/classic stuff.
aww, I know Krupo... but there has to be a line drawn somewhere. There are such things as vintage videogames it's called ATARI And I believe there are some about that era here.
Thanks Jonny, I don't want to be an ogre about it. Ultimately there should be a guideline... It's not 'my' channel really it belongs to the community.
True. If we're not careful, original sift-ups will be called vintage. We'll strike those ideas down with the *no-channel bat, but it's good to have lines. Guidelines, if you will.
